“THIS IS AS READY AS it’s going to get.”

Rett blew a breath out through her teeth and studied her Omni, finalizing her checklist, releasing certain password protected areas so Kraym could access them with his code, since her Omni would be staying behind with him.

She mulled things over, trying to find any detail she might have missed and still had time to correct. Her portion of the attack force was now paused at their last checkpoint, only some ten miles from the city limits.

Colonel Evard had come through, whomping up two extra battalions from somewhere, so instead of the original three promised, five more battalions of the twenty that comprised the 52nd had come in. Rett had sent them to the east flank.

He also contacted AirSpacefighters personally instead of going through channels in MainCommand. Whatever he told them got results. The personnel- and equipment-challenged flying arm of the Free Army managed to scrape together a drone squadron and two human piloted fighters, which would carry backseaters to control the unmanned craft. These waited for the first opening in the weather, which was unquestionably ominous.

Another squadron was being rerouted from far to the east near Azurebay, which was experiencing the third tropical storm to make landfall on the east coast in as many tendays. Whether they came in time to be useful to the attack or not remained to be seen. Evard hadn’t even been able to secure a departure time, much less a definite ETA.

All that mattered was that the squadrons were coming. Whenever they arrived, and if the attack was successful, they’d stay on permanently as part of the new Circle defense.

Corporal Bhayorn escorted two young and enthusiastic representatives from the civilian resistance defenders in Circle, identical twins of a gangly seventeen. How they had slipped safely though the tight net of sophisticated devices the enemy had around the city was anyone’s guess. Rett didn’t take the time to ask them, instead giving them her full attention as they gave their report.

“We’re going to have the most important places marked so you can target them first—”

“—with this,” said the other, leaning over to take Rett’s Omni right out of her hands so he could trace the symbol on the screen.

“It’s a chewie bird,” explained the first twin. “We use its call to signal, too.”

“There—” started Rett.

“There’s no chewies around here,” the second one said right on top of what Rett had been about to point out. “But the Coalition doesn’t know that. So they don’t pay any attention to our whistles.”

Rett managed a nod. “I—”

“Our uncle’s group at the spaceport has a plan, too,” said the first eagerly. “They have access to the main power supply. There’s a technician there who’s tapped into their scanning and tracking systems—she’s put false signals out there for them before. She can put scanner echoes everywhere, blur their signals, set off their alarms. She’s ready to do it again so their attention can get diverted elsewhere—”

“—and everyone who isn’t going to shelter is going to cause as much confusion as they can.
